Beetle Identification & Prevention

What are beetles?

Beetles are among the most common and varied insects; hundreds of thousands of different species of beetles live worldwide.

Beetles are separated from other insects by their wings. Most insects have two pairs of wings, and the beetle is no exception. However, the first pair of beetle's wings are hardened and protect the second pair of more delicate wings. The thickened outer wings meet at the middle of their body and form a line down the beetle's back.

Another fact to know about beetles is that they all have chewing mouthparts. We often group the beetles that invade our yards and homes by their feeding habits. Depending on the species, you can refer to beetles as fabric pests, stored product pests, pantry pests, or wood-destroying pests.

Are beetles dangerous?

A beetle's feeding habits are what make them dangerous pests. Beetle larvae cause the most damage. After the adult female lays her eggs on a suitable food source, the larvae hatch and begin feeding on and contaminating the food source provided. Beetles feed on many things, including wood, natural or synthetic fabrics, fur, feathers, and dried goods.

Why do I have a beetle problem?

Beetles infest rugs, boxes, plants, dry goods, clothing, and more in our homes and will hitchhike to new locations in those items.

Another common way that beetles get into our Georgia homes is through dry goods purchased from stores with beetle eggs or larvae already in them.

While not as common, adult beetles can move indoors on their own. Many beetles are attracted to light, and a home's outdoor light fixtures draw them to windows and doors. As they crawl around, they move inside through gaps they discover around windows and doors.

Where are beetles commonly found?

Outside, beetles live in damp, dark areas that provide them with easy access to food sources. Common places to discover beetles in our Georgia yards include:
  • Gardens and flowerbeds
  • Trees
  • Woodpiles
  • Under trash cans and potted plants
In our homes, kitchens, bathrooms, basements, closets, pantries, and attics provide beetles with their basic needs and are areas they like to feed and breed.

How can I prevent beetles in the future?

Controlling beetles is best done with the help of an experienced professional. In addition to the pest control services at Anthem Pest Control, the following tips will help you make your property less attractive to beetles.
  • Regularly vacuum and dust your home to eliminate pet hair, your family's hair, dust, and other debris that beetles larvae could use as a food source.
  • Don't purchase dry goods from the store with holes or tears in the packaging.
  • Don't use cardboard boxes to store clothing, fabrics, or food in your home; use plastic containers with airtight, locking lids.
  • Replace white outdoor bulbs with yellow bulbs or LED bulbs; they are less attractive to insects and won't attract large numbers of beetles to the exterior of your home.
  • Keep beetles out of your home by sealing any cracks and crevices around windows and doors, replacing torn screens, and repairing cracks in the foundation.
