Rodent Identification & Prevention

What are rodents?

Rodents are mammals. They are also one of the most frequent yet unwanted visitors to our homes. As we have taken over more outdoor spaces, rodents have adapted to living near people. Any property can become a home to rodents, whether located in a rural, suburban, or urban area.

There are many rodents living worldwide, but the most common to cause problems for people and our properties are mice and rats. Both are commensal, which means they have learned to "share our table."

Are rodents dangerous?

There are many problems with rodents deciding our homes are where they want to live, feed, and breed. Rodents aren't just annoying, nuisance pests; they are dangerous to both people and properties.
  • Rodents carry and spread pathogens and bacteria in their saliva and excrement that make people ill.
  • When in our homes, rodents quickly contaminate food and surfaces.
  • Rodents are preferred hosts of many fleas and ticks and are often responsible for triggering a property's flea or tick infestation.
  • To keep the front incisors that grow continuously throughout their life from overgrowing, rodents constantly gnaw on objects to wear them down. Their chewing causes damage to wires, pipes, furniture, clothing, food storage containers, and more.
  • A rodent infestation can trigger fires and can cause water leaks.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

Our garbage cans, kitchens, pet food, gardens, and grill areas provide rodents with a free all-they-can-eat buffet! Our homes offer rodents temperature-controlled, safe shelter and leaky pipes, and the low-lying regions in our yards provide easy access to water.

Rodents are a problem on our properties because they offer the things they need to survive. But rodents don't just survive in our yard and homes; they thrive! The food, water, and shelter we unintentionally offer them produce populations of healthy rodents.

Where are rodents commonly found?

You will find rodents wherever they can make themselves comfortable. In our yards. They hide out in areas that shelter them from predators and harsh weather conditions.

Things like woodpiles, construction debris, dense landscaping, shrubs, and trees provide rodents with shelter in our yards near our homes. Outbuildings like garages and sheds and even your kid's playhouses can be a place these crafty critters nest.

When the temperatures fall and food becomes scarce outside, many rodents prefer indoor accommodations. They move inside through chimneys, vents, and spaces in exterior walls and around windows and doors.

Once inside, they gather materials they find to create a nest. We often discover nests in dark, quiet places like closets, cabinets, under floors, attics, and behind walls voids. Damp, dark crawl spaces, or basements are other favorite nesting spots.
