Silverfish, commonly referred to as bristletails, are easily spotted because of the three long thin appendages extending from the abdomen. They also have some “fish-like” qualities, including metallic scales covering their brownish bodies and moving in a wriggling motion. Other physical features that help identify silverfish include thread-like antennae and eyes set far apart on their head.
Despite their name, silverfish are not aquatic pests, but they do have high moisture requirements. These insects don’t have the most attractive appearance and often startle people who come across them, especially when these insects are inside our homes.
Silverfish contaminate food and cause damage to papers and other personal belongings. They are more damaging than dangerous pests. Silverfish aren’t known to spread diseases to people, nor do they cause major structural damage.
The presence of silverfish is often an indicator of a moisture problem in or around your home. They are also a sign that there are openings in the exterior of your house that will allow other pests to get inside as well, leading to even bigger problems in the future.
Anywhere moisture becomes trapped are places where silverfish could congregate. When silverfish live outside near your home, and the weather becomes unsuitable, they often migrate indoors, taking advantage of the dark, damp hiding spots our homes provide.
Things in our yards that offer silverfish the moisture they are looking for include:
Keep silverfish out of your pantry’s dry goods by storing them in hard-sided containers with locking lids.
Get rid of excess boxes and papers from your home.
Store your clothing, blankets, and other fabric items in plastic containers with locking lids to keep moisture and silverfish from attacking these things.
Repair things like leaky pipes, air conditioners, and poor ventilation that cause excess moisture to build up in your home.
Keep wandering silverfish out by sealing cracks in the foundation, repairing damaged wood trim, and installing door sweeps.
Use dehumidifiers to keep humidity levels in your home low.Free Quote BANNER - DESKTOP
